Daguerreotypes
In historic photographic portraiture there is an unnerving stillness. The extended exposure time has created a frozen pose and the subject is not accurately represented as having a fluid moving personality. The eyes have gone to a far off place, often blurred and translucent from blinking. In the time it takes for the lens to open and close a startling look is captured. It is these moments of stillness that fascinate me, sometimes eerie and awkward or calm and confidant. To make these images I used the daguerreotype process discovered by Edward Bequerrel in the 1840's.
